
VA Crushers '99 Take 1st Place at the
2009 NSA Play for a Cure Tournament
The Virginia Crushers ’99 Girls Fastpitch Softball team swept to a 5-0 record to claim first place in the 2009 Play for a Cure NSA tournament, held in Sterling, Va. The Crushers went through Saturday’s pool play 3-0. In the final game of the day, against the SYA Xplosion the Crushers were facing defeat, down 7-6 in the final innings. Erin Jones reached first on a walk and scored on Serenity Stewart’s double after stealing 2nd to tie the game. Madison Hool then laid down a textbook bunt to bring home Stewart for the go ahead run. Emily Weatherholtz, in relief of starting pitcher Sydney Fisher, struck out the side to seal the win.On Sunday the Crushers faced the Loudon Storm in the semifinals game. Exploding for five runs behind a 2 RBI double by Julia Sinnet and 2 more RBIs from Bailey Mastin, the Crushers took the win 7-0. Leah Shipp threw a no hitter from the circle.
In the championship the Crushers faced the Vienna Stars. With 2 triples by Leah Shipp and another from Diane Anders, the Crushers took a 10-2 win to claim their second tournament championship of the fall season.For the weekend, Leah Shipp, Bailey Mastin, and Erin Jones all hit over 400, with Madison Hool reaching base 4 out of 6 times.
